1. CQSS Introduction

In 2011, Qingdao No.9 Middle School passed the inspection and received the approval from Qingdao Education Bureau to start a Chinese Canadian dual program (CQSS). The CQSS curriculum is based on the curriculum requirements of the two countries. Upon certification, students of CQSS will be registered by both the Chinese and Canadian high school Board of Education, and will study the curriculum from both countries. After they pass the provincial exams, they will be issued the high school diplomas from these two countries.

The mission of the Canada Qingdao Secondary School is to provide a high quality Canadian education to students in Qingdao. A Canadian education promotes personal excellence in students, and engages learners in developing both intellect and character. The overriding goal of such an education is to enable students to succeed in western universities. CQSS provides students the opportunity to study courses from the British Columbia curriculum in grades 10, 11, and 12 and to earn credits toward graduation in the BC Offshore Schools Program.

Students entering the BC program are required to take an English entrance qualifying examination. This exam will be used to help determine a student’s suitability for studying the BC curriculum. 

2. CQSS Teaching Model

1. Both the Chinese and Canadian sides share responsibilities for the management of the school. On the Canadian side, we have a well-experienced high-school principal and teachers to ensure the implementation of the Canadian course system. On the Chinese side, Qingdao No.9 Middle School delegates their teachers with rich experience and good English language ability to be responsible for the Chinese courses.

2. All the teaching equipments and facilities of CQSS meet the requirements for Canadian high schools (such as small class, a private library, activity rooms, etc.).

3. All the CQSS Canadian textbooks synchronize with the national high school textbooks, and all the Chinese textbooks are state-complied textbooks.

4. Canadian teachers will organize clubs and extracurricular activities to meet students’ diverse interest and specialties, at the same time increase students’ use of English outside of classroom.

5. There will be a sufficient amount of social planning classes. In addition to classroom teaching and club time, we will arrange a sufficient amount of social planning classes according to the Canadian Ministry of Education.

6. Short term study tour to Coquitlam school district in Canada. We will arrange a short term study tour for students of CQSS. Students will have a chance to visit the Coquitlam school district and communicate with the local students and teachers.

3. CQSS advantage and course characteristics 

1. Chinese and Canadian dual registration and high school diploma. Fulfill the dream of studying abroad without going abroad.

2. Both our Chinese and Canadian course education is of high quality. We use original Canadian high school textbooks, and focus on training international talents with cross-culture backgrounds. 

3. Our English classes are taught by both Chinese and Canadian teachers. All of the Canadian courses are taught in English only. Students will experience a real Canadian learning environment and culture.  

4. CQSS has a strong teachers’ team. All of our staff are well-experienced in teaching, classroom management and life in general.

5. CQSS offers you small classroom arrangement with well-managed school system. We focus on developing students’ personality and cultivating students’ special skills.

6. Students can apply for colleges and universities of many English speaking countries.

CQSS offers student advising services, including:

? Help with program and course selection

 ? Help solving academic difficulties, and if necessary, arranging for a tutor

? Information on universities

?One-to-one counselling sessions on university selection

? Discussion of personal problems and assistance in making sound decisions

4. School Fees

There are three fees that parents need to pay: the school tuition, the registration fee, and the book rental fee. The tuition fee is 54,600 rmb/ year. The book rental fee is $300/ year. These fees will stay consistent over the next three years. The book fee is used for BC school textbooks as well as for tax and shipping costs. It is also used to buy books and novel sets for the CQSS English-language library. Students will access this library regularly.

The third fee is the registration fee. All students entering BC offshore programs at the Grade 10 level (in China and elsewhere) are required to pay a $350 registration fee. This fee is used to pay for the administration of student records, transcripts, and for the British Columbia Certificate of Graduation. It is also used to pay for the five required examinations that students will take in Grade 10, 11, and 12.

5. BC Graduation Program

Listed below are the BC graduation requirements. In three years, students must earn a minimum of 80 credits. Students who successfully meet these Ministry of Education graduation requirements will be entitled to receive the Provincial Dogwood Graduation Diploma of British Columbia. Each course is worth 4 credits.  (A credit is roughly equivalent to 30 hours of instruction)

Electives are additional courses offered at CQSS to support students’ academic, career, or personal interests.  In Grade 10, electives include Mandarin 10, and ESL 10.
